This is a regular XL T-shirt imprinted with a graphic which is the logo for Blackboard, an Education Software for providing remote education. To be used as swag at a conference, the shirts were vacuum packed into cubes so that could easily be stacked and distributed, but it’s a regular Tshirt in an XL size. Blackboard? It was the mid-to-late 90s and on-line education was just becoming a thing. This was long before Covid caused schools and students the world over to rush to online delivery. One of the first companies to make software for delivering distance education was Blackboard. At an educational conference for registrars and provosts in 1996, Blackboard (the vendor) gave out these “T-Shirts in a Cube” as a promotional item. T-Shirt in a Cube? It was a short lived but fun trend: Cotton T-shirts where vacuum packed & shrink wrapped into a square cube. When opened, the shirt springs open and reassumes its full size. What I Don’t Know: This shirt’s never been unpackaged so I can’t say whether it’s short or long sleeved (I’ve listed it as short sleeved, but that’s a guess), and I don’t know whether the graphic is on the front or back of the shirt. I only know that the 4″ x 4″ graphic you see – of a traditional classroom blackboard with a chalk-line letter “B” – appears somewhere on the unfolded shirt – likely the front. It’s marked XL but I cannot measure it without destroying the cool “in a cube” feature. Presumably there’s a label, and it might even be from a well known T-shirt maker, but I cannot vouch for that. What I Do know: It fits nicely into a bureau drawer, gym bag, suitcase, or glove box, taking up very little space until you happen to need it. It celebrates one of the software giants of the early 90s whose R&D helped bring online education to the forefront of educational delivery in 1st world countries.
